Cycling sportives and brevets have spawned serious randonneuring kit, and we recently received a Lynskey custom titanium frame with Alpha Q carbon fork for testing.
Built with our own select components, this 61cm frame weighs just 3.07lbs. The Alpha Q fork, designed to handle long-reach road brake calipers for mudguard clearance, weighs just 403g cut to length.
The new crankbrothers Cobalt DirectSet weighs just 88g with the starnut and top cap.
We choose handbuilt wheels from Chris King, using the 32-hole Classic hubs, laced to DT Swiss RR1.1 rims. The front wheel weighs 794g (without skewer), and the rear weighs 1,162g (without skewer). Specialized Mondo 700x23c S-Works clincher tyres round out the wheelset, shielded from the rain by Planet Bike’s Cascadia mudguards.
The gruppo is Shimano’s Ultegra SL (brake/shift levers, 12-27T 10spd cassette, 175mm x 50/34T compact crankset, clipless pedals, front and rear derailleurs).
We choose the new FSA SL-K 10spd chain, bar tape, and Wing Pro handlebars. A right (rear) Specialized top-mount brake interrupter adds another stop op.
Seatpost and stem are from Macon, Georgia-based Thomson, and weigh 193g and 147g, respectively. Saddle is the 252g Specialized Phenom Ti Gel.
Complete, the Lynskey weighs right around 20lbs., not bad for a stout, strong and durable randonneuring machine.
