Just In: Ridley Helium

Superlight and superstiff.

The 2008 Ridley Helium in action on Old LaHonda Road in Woodside, CA.

Ridley USA’s Mike Taylor stopped by the BikeRadar US workshop with a treat: a 15.8lb. Ridley Helium for test.

The US$2,999 frameset (frame, fork headset and seat clamp) has a claimed weight of 900g for a medium size. Taylor’s Large sample was built with Campagnolo Chorus and FSA cockpit. Ridley pioneered the 1/8-inch to 1.5-inch head tube in 2005, pre-dating Trek by two years.

Our saddle time was spent doing the popular Loop through Los Altos, Palo Alto, Portola Valley and Woodside, up the legendary Old La Honda Road climb, a favourite litmus test of mine for first rides.

Verdict? Snappy sprinter, reliable descender, and stiff climber. Look for a complete review on BikeRadar.com in the coming months.
