PIC BY TDWSPORT.COM Lance Armstrong’s announcement that he will take part in this year’s Tour de France has had a significant effect on the stakes being placed on the race, with the Texan becoming the heavy odds-on favourite for a seventh consecutive title. Prior to the announcement, there was no clear favourite for the race, but Armstrong now seems to be hoovering up the stake money of punters gambling on the Tour. “Armstrong’s fans really believe in him,” says Mike Foreman, spokesperson for “Some say a seventh win is unlikely, but gamblers who watch cycling closely are wagering a lot of money on Armstrong standing on the winner’s podium once again this July”. According to Foreman, Armstrong is everyone’s favourite. “Even if you don’t know anything about the sport, you know who Lance Armstrong is and what he’s accomplished,” says Foreman. “With all that Lance has overcome in his personal life, it’s as if he’s become a sort of hero in the eyes of the American public”. Foreman adds: “There’s always a chance that another rider like Andreas Kloeden or Jan Ullrich may grab the title. Nevertheless, Armstrong won the 2004 race by six minutes and 19 seconds and that’s a substantial win. Armstrong said last year’s race was an easy win for him. I don’t doubt this year will be any different.” Foreman does, however, offer a mention for some potential Tour stars of the future. “The cycling profession has strong up-and-coming talent,” he says. “Cyclists such as Australia’s Michael Rogers and Russia’s Vladimir Karpets are starlight contenders for future races”. has Armstrong listed as the 4-7 favourite for the title, followed by Ullrich at 7-2 and Kloeden at 9-1. procycing, of course, does not favour any one rider over another, but does like the look of the 20-1 odds available on Alexandre Vinokourov.
