PIC © TIM DE WAELE Van Bon wins Nokere Koerse Dutchman Leon Van Bon (Rabobank) has won the 62nd edition of Nokere Koerse. Van Bon was the best rider in a three man breakaway that escaped a larger break with three laps to go. He proved too strong for his breakaway companions Aart Vierhouten (Skil-Shimano) and Geert Steurs (Predictor-Lotto). Only 23 riders finished the race, due to the cold and windy conditions. I believe I’m riding better than last year. Having strong and motivated teammates at my side makes me more serene.” Three others in Liquigas will play key roles: Luca Paolini, Enrico Gasparotto and Franco Pellizotti. Unfortunately, Milano-Torino winner Danilo Di Luca won’t be starting due to illness. “The contribution of Paolini, Gasparotto and Pellizotti will be very valuable,” said team manager Roberto Amadio. “Pozzato raced Tirreno-Adriatico in view of Sanremo and will be our top man. Having more alternatives will play in his favour and makes Liquigas one of the strongest teams. There are at least other five teams aiming at the win which could use the same strategy as us. So the management of the race could depend on us but also on Quick Step, Lampre and Milram, for example.” The full Liquigas squad at Milan-Sanremo: Patrick Calcagni, Enrico Gasparotto, Luca Paolini, Franco Pellizotti, Roberto Petito, Filippo Pozzato, Manuel Quinziato and Alessandro Spezialetti. Tom Boonen and Paolo Bettini will lead the Quick.Step squad in Milan-San Remo. Boonen will be aiming to record his first ever victory in La Primavera, while Bettini will be hoping that his knee is recovered well enough after crashing several times during Tirreno-Adriatico. The others in the Quick.Step line-up are Kevin Hulsmans, Sbastien Rosseler, Kevin Van Impe, Matteo Tosatto, Giovanni Visconti and Carlos Barredo. Shorts Dutch sprinter Theo Bos has signed for Rabobank. The multiple world champion on the track has a contract until the end of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He will not be racing on the road. Team has a new sponsor for when it races in France, according to Het Nieuwsblad. The Swedish-registered team has encountered legal problems racing in France due to the nature of its sponsor. But the team will unveil a new France-specific one for the GP Cholet on Sunday: German bike manufacturer Canyon. “We will take brand new cars for France,” said team leader Hilaire Van Der Schueren to Het Nieuwsblad. “We hope also to get the right to start in races that are organised by ASO.” Got a comment?
