The 2008 Le Tour de Langkawi was launched in Bukit Jalil, Malaysia on Wednesday. The 13th edition of the race is scheduled for February 9th-17th and will feature five ProTour teams among its 25 team line up. The full route is expected to be announced on December 18th.
Le Tour de Langkawi receives most of its funding from the Malaysian government via the Ministry of Youth and Sports. “The involvement of the Ministry will ensure the continued growth and prestige of the race,” said Datuk Naim Mohamad, the race’s CEO. “The Tour will also play a massive role in the development of the sport in the country.”
Next year’s race also aims to get closer to the people. “In order to achieve this, we will be organizing more events on the ground which means more carnival-like activities at all start and finish venues,” said Datuk Naim. “One of the side events to be included will be cycling clinics … One of the other key messages is also to encourage more Malaysians to take up cycling as a means to a healthier lifestyle.”
Besides this, LTdL contributes to the promotion of Malaysia as a tourist destination. “I believe this is the only sporting event in the country that really showcases the true beauty and charm of Malaysia,” said Datuk Naim.
