Lisbon hosted its 6th Downtown event on 7th May 2005. By all accounts there were perfect conditions, 27degree heat, lots of sun and a massive crowd of some 15,000 fans who showed up to watch. But, best of all it was a great event for the British riders who dominated the podium.
It was a great course but apparently pretty slippy over cobble stones, steps and tram lines; however Steve Peat upheld his usual dominance with his fourth win here, and fought off the stiff competition from Mick Hannah, Greg Minnaar and David Vazquez.
The female podium was entirely British thanks to Rachel Atherton – the youngest competitor – who came first with a fantastic smooth but fast run, Helen Gaskell who was runner-up and Tracey Moseley who took 3rd place.
Shortly after her win, Rachel commented: “I’m lucky, I’ve been here before, I think that helps because the training is so limited. The course was a bit different this year and it was very slippery in the beginning of training, but I’m really excited to have taken the win here, it means a lot”.
