Mallorca 3: Rojas takes the day

Gilbert back in command

Jose Joaquin Rojas won stage 3

José Joaquín Rojas of Caisse d’Epargne took out the third day in the Volta a Mallorca – winning the Trofeo Pollença ahead of Italian Champion Giovanni Visconti (Quick Step) and new race leader, Belgian Philippe Gilbert (Française des Jeux). It was the second career win for the 22 year-old Spaniard, after winning the opening stage in the 2007 Vuelta a Murcia.

The day was marked by a category two climb, the Col de Soler, and the category one Puig Major, but a group of 56 riders made to Port d’Alcúdia to contest the finish. Gilbert’s tact enabled him to take back the jersey he donned after winning the first day’s event, the Trofeo Mallorca.

The five-day race continues tomorrow with 162 kilometres to be covered in the Trofeo Sóller.
