Mallorca 4: Gilbert takes win number two

Rojas crashes out of lead

Stunning scenery in Mallorca

Belgian Philippe Gilbert (Française des Jeux) took his second win of the 17th Challenge Volta a Mallorca on Wednesday, beating Rabobank’s young sprinter, 23-year-old Sebastian Langeveld to the line. The leader in the general classification, José Joaquín Rojas (Caisse d’Epargne) crashed in the final meters of the race and was forced to withdraw, passing the jersey onto Gilbert.

Estonian Rein Taaramae (Cofidis) and Jesús del Nero (Saunier Duval) made up the day long breakaway, going clear early in the race and opening up a lead which they held over the first three climbs of the day in the lead. A crash on the Puig Major descent disrupted their efforts, and Alberto Contador (Astana) attacked, catching the leaders and going away up the final climb of the day, but with a long descent to the finish, Contador was caught with eight kilometres to go. The 70-man sprint went to Gilbert over Langeveld, with Quick Step’s Maarten Wynants in third.
