Millar wins British championship

Scot strongest in two-man finale

David Millar (Saunier Duval) is the new British road race champion after out-sprinting Daniel Lloyd (DFL-Cyclingnews) on the line in yesterday’s rescheduled British championships in Abergavenny. New Zealander Gordon McCauley (Plowman Craven/Evans cycles) was third and Hamish Haynes (DFL-Cyclingnews) took the British championship bronze by finishing fourth.

Millar missed the early break but bridged across to it, along with Daniel Lloyd and Russell Downing (Healthnet). The Plowman Craven and teams powered the chase and with the break about to be caught Millar attacked again, taking Lloyd with him.

Millar and Lloyd increased their lead on the seven-lap finishing circuit as the chase group broke up.

As the line approached, Millar kicked hard on the final bend, claiming his second victory of the 2007 season.
