The Italian Association of Professional Riders (ACCPI) has announced that it is to hold a competition to find a design for a sculpture to honour Marco Pantani that will be placed on the infamous Mortirolo climb. The initiative was the idea of former Tour de France winner Felice Gimondi, and is being backed by the bike manufacturer Bianchi, for whom Gimondi works and who supplied Pantani with bikes for much of his career.
There is a prize of 10,000 euros on offer to the winner of the competition with entries requested to “capture the essence and the recognisability of Marco Pantani. The adventurous and heroic spririt of the ‘Pirate’ should be shown on the terrain where he was at his best: the steepest mountains.” The sculpture will be placed in the commune of Mazzo in Valtellina.
The ACCPI has set up a commission to oversee the selection of the winning sculpture, with its members including Pantani’s father, Paolo, as well as ex-riders Gianni Bugno, Giuseppe Calcaterra, Claudio Chiappucci, Mario Cipollini, Roberto Conti, and Gimondi.
