Celebrate mountain culture at the Nevis range

The 2008 Fort William Mountain Festival is due to be staged from Friday 15 to Saturday 23 February and promises to be a nine day extravaganza of films, lectures, guided walks, workshops, exhibitions, literature, photography and music.


FortWilliam is a huge draw for mountain bikers, and as such played host to this year’s Mountain Bike World Championships. During the festival, mountain bike specialists No Fuss Events will lead a skills day on the ‘Ten Under The Ben’ mountain bike cross country course in the LeanachanForest.

Billy Savage, Gary Fisher and Charlie Kelly will also be at the festival to introduce visitors to the origins of mountain biking in the Scottish Premiere of their film ‘Klunkerz’ while Richard Moore will be there to shed some light on the enigma that is Scotland’s ‘king of the mountains’ cyclist Robert Millar.

Other festival highlights include ‘Party at Nevis Range’, the official opening party in the Snowgoose Restaurant at the Range’s upper gondola station; a Paddle Sports evening with kayaking legend Corran Addison and a celebration of 75 years of the Mountain Rescue Service. The Nevis Connections evening will celebrate the spirit of Nevis in music, poetry, prose photography and the film Biking Trail-blazers, will offer an intriguing insight into legends of road and mountain biking while a Mountaineering Evening with Jo Gambi, will be a lecture by the first woman to climb the seven highest mountains in seven continents and ski to the North and South Poles.
