Over 600 riders braved the rain and mud at the Gorrick Spring Series at Yately Heath Woods, southwest England on 18 January.
So many riders turned up to compete in the event’s 22 categories that organisers ran out of entry forms.
Racing began at 9am, with waves of riders taking on the muddy course throughout the day.
Torrential rain the night before forced organisers to divert riders away from a particularly badly flooded section, cutting the trail down from five miles to a modest 3.5.
81 competitors lined up for the Veterans race, with local rider Steve Jones taking the gold medal. Mart Smith finished second, with Daran Blackwell just behind. Jackie Roberts claimed victory in the women’s Vet event.
Steven James put in a particularly impressive performance in his first Junior category race. He also attempted the Elite race, finishing in fifth place ahead of many older and more experienced riders.
First place in the Elite race went to Gareth Montgomerie, with teammates Scott Forbes and Chris Minter picking up second and third.
Tim Kemp rode to victory in the Fun category, with Matt Widley and Steven James taking second and third place respectively. Alison Linnel secured a comfortable win in the women’s Fun event.
Entries are now open for the second round of the series, which takes place at Tunnell Hill on 8 February. To enter, visit www.gorrick.com.
