Having failed to contend this year, Ivan Basso says he will be back again to win the Giro next year,

Ivan Basso begins a “new Giro” after his ill-timed bout with dysentery and nausea derailed his hopes for overall victory. After forfeiting the maglia rosa and nearly 40 minutes to the overall favourites, Basso now wants a final bit of revenge.
“Now a new Giro begins for me,” Basso said. “I have been able to eat more or less normally again during the rest day and I am starting to feel a bit like myself again. I would like to try to win a stage if possible.”
Basso survived Wednesday’s transition stage to the Italian Riviera and now turns his attention to three decisive stages sandwiched around Turin. What should have been a victory march through the Alps will now turn into his road to personal redemption.
“We can only look forward. Sure, it’s disappointing, but that’s what happens in cycling,” he said. “All I can do now is to try to win a stage. I’ve had a good Giro, finishing second twice and taking the leader’s jersey. I became sick and there’s nothing I can do about that.”
Basso continued by insisting he’ll return to the Giro next year to make up for his bitter disappointment, but first comes the Tour de France.
“I want to come back to win the Giro. The fans have been so supportive of me and their gestures alongside the road helped me make it through the difficult moments,” he said. “I will try to finish the Giro strong and then think about the Tour de France.”
