Tour de France organisers ASO have confirmed that there will only be 21 teams starting the Tour de France in July, dashing the hopes of French continental team Agritubel, who had high hopes of gaining late selection for the race.
ASO had decided to consider Agritubel for inclusion after their riders rode strongly at Paris-Roubaix last month, with Florent Brard their first finisher in seventh place. However, ASO has judged that Agritubel’s stage race appearances since Roubaix have not merited their inclusion in the Tour, so the race will start with just 21 teams. Ag2r are the only non-ProTour team to have been selected.
“We have to accept the decision but I am obviously disappointed,” said Agritubel DS Denis Leproux on hearing the news. “I don’t want to say anything in the heat of the moment. We are all going to get together to discuss the consequences of this.”
