World champion Judith Arndt proved a high-class winner of the first-ever Grand Prix of Wales World C

The German Nurnberger team dominated proceedings in Saturday’s inaugural Grand Prix of Wales World Cup event in Newport. World champion Judith Arndt won the 114km race, ahead of Susanne Ljungskog, while Arndt’s Nurnberger team-mate Oenone Wood was third and maintained her overall World Cup lead, although the Australian’s advantage was cut to just four points by Ljungskog.

The tough course included a hard 4.5km climb with a steep descent before another climb of around one kilometre, 300 metres from the finish line. On the final lap Arndt hit the front near the top of the final climb, setting up to lead out Wood, who was on her wheel. Ljungskog was next in line but the Australian opted to back off her team-mate and let Arndt ride for the victory and the maximum points, while the Australian made sure she retained the series lead.

In the absence of British champion Nicole Cooke due to a knee injury, the leading home rider was Rachel Heal, who finished 23rd, a place ahead of team-mate Emma Pooley, 30 seconds down on Arndt.

The series continues next Saturday with the GP Ouest France in the Breton town of Plouay.
