Last rider off Oscar Pereiro won this evening’s prologue time trial through the streets of Geneva’s old city. The Phonak rider deprived Paolo Savoldelli of a first victory in Discovery Channel colours when he knocked a quarter of a second off the time that had been set two hours earlier by the Italian.
Third place went to Stefano Garzelli, with last year’s prologue winner Brad McGee fourth, Erik Dekker fifth and CSC’s Frank Schleck sixth.
Twenty-seven-year-old Pereiro, who was 10th in last year’s Tour de France, has enjoyed some his best moments in Switzerland. His biggest win before today’s was a stage in the Tour of Switzerland two years ago. Although the advantage he holds over the likes of past Giro d’Italia winners Savoldelli and Garzelli is minimal, the Spaniard could prove difficult to shift from top spot.
Tomorrow’s first stage goes out of and then back into the town of Avenches, crossing two third-category climbs on the way. These should prove no obstacle to the gaggle of top class sprinters in the Romandie field, with Alessandro Petacchi the man to beat.
