PIC BY TDWSPORT.COM Philippe Gilbert took one of the most impressive breakaway wins seen at the top level of the sport for some time on Tuesday’s second stage of the Dauphin Libr into Saint Galmier. The Belgian finished more than five minutes clear of the bunch, and he now holds a significant 5-22 lead as the tougher sections of the race come closer. Gilbert went clear 44km with Franaise des Jeux team-mate Sbastien Joly and Cdric Vasseur (Quick Step). The trio worked well together as the peloton eased off. With a number of climbs to come heading into the finish, the bunch no doubt thought they had enough time to react. On the Cte de Brioude, the two FDJ riders decided to push on without Vasseur, but were still 50 rolling kilometres from the finish. Another 10 kilometres on and Gilbert opted to press on alone, and amazingly his advantage stayed steady rather than diminishing. It soon became a question of just how much the 23-year-old Belgian would win by, and his five-minute lead should be more than enough to keep him in the lead after Wednesday’s 43km time trial at Bourg de Page.
