Pippo and Casa change teams
Italians Pippo Pozzato and Francesco Casagrande both announced they were leaving their current teams
PICTURE BY TIM DE WAELE Two weeks after being prevented from starting the Vuelta because of an elevated red blood cell count, Francesco Casagrande has announced that he is leaving Lamper to ride for Vini Caldirola, with whom he raced in 1999 and 2000. Casagrande has negotiated his release from his current contract with Lampre, and could well race in Vini Caldirola colours in next weekend’s Tour of Emilia one-day race. Casagrande, who was 34 last Tuesday, will ride for his new team until the end of the season, no doubt with the objective of having that deal extended into 2005, which he has said will be his final season as a pro. Another Italian who has negotiated his way out of his current contract is Tour de France stage winner Filippo Pozzato. He has fallen out with Fassa Bortolo team boss Giancarlo Ferretti, and has paid an opt-out sum laid down in his contract. His most likely destination is the returning Liquigas team.
