Women’s downhill mountain bike world champion Rachel Atherton (Animal/Commencal) is back at home after successful surgery on her injured shoulder.
The 21-year-old sister of fellow downhillers and team-mates Gee and Dan is recovering well after the operation and is already itching to get back into training, according to her manager.
“I’m so stoked – I can’t believe how well I felt even the next morning – the surgeon has worked wonders,” Atherton said. “I’d like to thank everyone for their messages of support and hope to be back in action as soon as possible.”
Atherton was involved in a training accident with a car in Santa Cruz, California on 19 January, sustaining a dislocated shoulder and cuts to the face.
According to early reports, Atherton hit the car head-on while riding her road bike – which took most of the impact of the crash. She was training with her brothers.
She is hoping to be fit to defend her world championship title in Canberra, Australia in September.
