Fassa Bortolo’s steamrollering start to the season continues as their riders take wins and the race

As has often been the case for much of this season already, Fassa Bortolo enjoyed another good day of racing yesterday, scooping victories at Semana Catalana and the Coppi e Bartali stage race. Fassa riders now lead both events. The Coppi e Bartali race in Italy began with a split stage. The first part of it ended in a bunch sprint that was won by Panaria’s Guillermo Bongiorno, the Argentinian’s first success in Italy. Fassa sprinter Francesco Chicchi was second, but a winning performance by his team in the afternoon’s team time trial soon lifted the young galloper to the top of the overall standings. Fassa finished six seconds clear of Liquigas-Bianchi, with the American Navigators team in an excellent third place. Another young Fassa sprinter, Claudio Corioni, improved one place from his opening day second to take the stage into Empuriabrava and take the race lead into the bargain. Today’s mountain stage to Pal in the Pyrenees should see some big names come to the fore, with Roberto Heras just one rider looking for a good performance to boost their early season progress.
