Rat Race heads Down Under
The Rat Race Urban Adventure Series heads to Australia this weekend. And national pride is at stake as the Scottish winners of the 2008 series fly over to take on the Aussies on home soil.
Bruce Duncan, Iona Robertson and Nick Gracie from Team Aberdeen Asset Management, who won the season finale in London in September, will line up on the starting grid in Melbourne alongside some of the best adventure racing teams Australia has to offer.
The race will challenge their navigation, endurance, mental agility, running, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking and abseiling skills on some challenging terrain.
Bruce said: “To win the trip out to Melbourne was fantastic. We hope to do the nation proud. We know the race will be tough – none of us knows the city and the searing heat will be a huge factor – but we’re a well-oiled machine, so hopefully we can use this to defeat the Aussies on their home turf.”
Bruce is a member of the British Mountain Bike Orienteering Team, Iona is an ex-Great Britain triathlete and former British and world 20-24 duathlon champion, and Nick is one of the UK’s most experienced adventure racers.
The Rat Race Urban Adventure Series started in Edinburgh in 2004 and has moved on to London, Manchester, Bristol, Brighton, Birmingham, Newcastle/Gateshead, Belfast and Galway. This is the first time a race has been staged in the southern hemisphere.
Andrew McTrusty, from course designers IDQ, said: “With a staggering amount of places to get wet, dirty and ratty, Melbourne is set to become the most intense Rat Race on the planet. We have some surprises in store and if you think you’ve seen it all, think again.”
Rat Race founder Jim Mee said: ‘Melbourne is a venue that the Rat Race feels right at home in. We’ve found the right location and the right partners for the first event outside the British Isles. We wanted to ensure all the pieces of the jigsaw were in place. They are – a great venue, a superb partner and a Rat-tastic course.”
Entries are still open. Head to www.ratraceaustralia.com.au for full details.
