Hans Rey’s ceaseless quest for a ceaseless quest
Hans Rey has been the most recognisable mountain bike rider since before MBUK was born, which means 15 years plus. The original trials star, the man who invented most of the ways of making money from riding bikes; adventurer, TV star, irrepressible entertainer, Hans has done more for the image of fat tyred bikes than most. And he’s still at it, doing shows and plotting new trips, making deals. So what are you up to now Hans?
“I’ve been working as an adviser on this cool TV series called Global Extremes. We took 50 amateur athletes and put them through a lot of challenges to select the five who are going to climb Everest. Which has given me the idea for my next Adventure Trip. There’s a beautiful valley on the eastern approach to Everest which I want to be the first to ride if I can do the TV deal. And I’m working on the longest downhill in Europe, 3,700 metres on Tenerife. And I’m…”
Is it more freeride than trials now?
“At the moment, perhaps. You can’t do everything any more. There was a time when Hans Rey could stand for everything radical done on a bike. Now there are so many niches and so many great specialist riders, so many heroes. That’s a good thing, but it means I have to specialise too. I just rode the Rubicon trail with Brian Lopes, did I mail you about that? It’s a famous jeep trail with rocks the size of furniture and you look at it and say ‘No Way!'”
