Route of the week: Geraardsbergen, Belgium
This week’s featured route is a 94km on-road tour of the Belgian countryside near Geraardsbergen. You can find it here on BikeRadar or here on bikely.com.
Plotted by ‘jverbrug’, this route makes excellent use of the dense network of roads in East Flanders, avoiding all major thoroughfares. Staring in Geraardsbergen, the home of the famous Muur as used in the Belgian classics, the ride wends its way through Deftinge and Sint-Martens Lierde on its way north. It skirts around Zottegem then heads through Balegem, Moortsele and Bottelare before heading eastward through Munte and Gavere.
The way home is through the very pleasant back roads around Zingem, Zwalm and Roborst, this time skirting the westward side of Zottegem. It cuts across the outward bound route to form a figure eight, heading back into Geraardsbergen via Steenhuize and Ophasselt. All up, it’s 94km of gently rolling terrain along quiet roads, climbing/descending 480 metres.
