It’s that time of the week again when we delve into the massive library of cycle routes on Bikely.com to bring you one of the highlights. Whether it’s a short, leisurely off-road jaunt for the family or a ten day on-road trek, we want to see your routes and if you spot a route on the site that you feel merits a heads-up to other riders, please let us know.
This week, as we sit at our desks in BikeRadar HQ, we find ourselves drooling over the Google map of New Zealand and the amazing scenery that this destination has to offer. Someone taking full advantage of the country’s mountain bike trails is “mustgetoutmore”, who’s plotted a route from Wainui High School to Strand Park in Wellington. With a total climb of 4065ft. and total descent of 4360ft, this is one route we’d love to ride.
At just over 21 miles long, the ride goes through some of the North Island’s native forest, just skirting the Rimutaka Forest Park. The terrain is mixed according to mustgetoutmore’s cue sheet – the ‘Everest’ climb sound interesting. “Start up ‘Everest’ on your left. Get chain-suck. Clean chain. Carry on climbing.,” says our man (or woman – perhaps he or she would care to let us know!).
After plenty of climbing, wet feet, loose gravel and riding through 4×4 vehicle tracks, the route ends in Strand Park. From what we gather from the cue sheet, mustgetoutmore works at a cycle clothing design shop…which is handy.
If you want to search for other people’s mountain bike routes on the site, simply type ‘offroad’ into the search box here.
If you want to upload one of your own routes, nip over to bikely.com now. It’s easy. Either draw your route directly onto the map or upload a .gpx file from your GPS device. We pay particular attention to routes with interesting notes attached, so get out there, get riding and show us your routes!
