Former Lampre rider Raimondas Rumsas has avoided prison after being found guilty by a French court in the Alpine town of Bonneville of importing doping products. The Lithuanian has been given a suspended sentence of four months for the offence, which stemmed from his wife’s detention at the French border following the discovery of a number of medical products in her car in July 2002.

Edita Rumsas, who was detained for 11 weeks by the French authorities in 2002, received the same four-month sentence as her husband for complicity in the offence. The couple were also fined 3,000 euros.

Polish doctor Krzysztof Ficek, who wrote out the prescriptions for the products, received a longer sentence of 12 months, but this was also suspended.
