Despite having already ridden the Giro d’Italia in the service of Ivan Basso and then been catapulted into the captain’s role at the Tour de France when Basso was refused a start, Carlos Sastre has told his CSC team he’s ready to take on the responsibility of being team leader once again at the Vuelta a Espa¤a, writes Susanne Horsdal.
“Carlos needed some time to decide whether he could also handle the Vuelta, but he’s told us he’s ready. Following his acceptance it’s obvious that we are aiming for the overall,” CSC sports diretor Kim Andersen told Danish paper Politiken.
So far 10 riders are in contention for a spot on CSC’s Vuelta roster including Stuart O’Grady, Fabian Cancellara, Kurt-Asle Arvesen, Jakob Piil and Lars Bak. Last year Sastre finished third in the Vuelta but was later – with the disqualification of Roberto Heras – promoted to runner-up behind Denis Menchov.
