Team CSC pulled a rabbit out of the hat when they announced their roster for the Giro d’Italia – a roster that includes Carlos Sastre. According to team manager Bjarne Riis, it was the Spaniard himself who suggested that he should ride the Giro, writes Susanne Horsdal.
“I have given it a lot of thought and after having spoken to Bjarne and Ivan (Basso) I had no doubts. I want to give something back to the team and I know I can make a difference for Ivan in the last week,” said Sastre, whose presence will certainly only add to Basso’s role as pre-race favourite.
With the addition of the Giro to Sastre’s race schedule, the Spaniard seems to be looking at a very hard season. Sastre, who booked one of his rare wins in last month’s Klasika Primavera, is also expected to be one of Basso’s main helpers in the Tour and will undoubtedly be the team’s captain in the Vuelta, where he finished runner-up last year.
“It’s a gift to have a rider like Carlos at our disposal in the Giro, and I’ve only made the decision because we agree that it makes sense with regard to the rest of his season,” said Riis.
Team CSC’s line up for the Giro is now: Ivan Basso, Carlos Sastre, Bobby Julich, Jens Voigt, Volodymir Gustov, Giovanni Lombardi, I¤igo Cuesta, Michael Blaudzun and Nicki Sorensen.
