Liberty Seguros’ Isidro Nozal underwent a haematocrit test at a UCI-registered laboratory in Valencia on Monday to assess whether he is fit to restart competition. Nozal was forced to sit out the Dauphin Libr earlier this month after registering a red blood cell count of 52%. Although the result of the latest test has not yet been announced, no rider has ever registered an elevated haematocrit result after an enforced lay-off of 15 days.
What is certain, however, is that Nozal will recommence his career with the Liberty team this coming weekend at the Spanish national road championships. But team boss Manolo Saiz has countered stories in the Spanish press about Nozal riding the Tour de France next month. “He has been under very severe psychological pressure for the last few days. I know him very well and I know that he’s not in the right condition to ride,” said Saiz. Nozal is not at this week’s Liberty training camp in Cantabria to decide final selection for the Tour.
– More than 700 people attended the funeral of Alessio Galletti yesterday. Among those present were former colleagues Mario Cipollini, Michele Bartoli, Maximiliano Sciandri, Ivan Gotti and Fabrizio Guidi, as well as the members of Galletti’s Naturino-Sapore di Mare team. Galletti, 37, suffered a heart attack during last week’s Subida al Naranco race in Spain and died at the side of the road.
– Liquigas-Bianchi have named their 10-rider squad for the Tour de France. The team will be led by Stefano Garzelli and also includes Dario Andriotti, Dario Cioni, Franco Pellizotti, Kljell Carlstrom, Luciano Pagliarini, Magnus Backstedt, Marcus Lungqvist, Michael Albasini and Patrick Calcagni.
