The women’s Tour of Italy, the Giro Donne, started on Friday with an opening time trial victory for defending champion Nicole Brandli (Bigla), who finished three seconds ahead of Buitenpoort’s Linda Villumsen on the 5.2km course, with Bigla’s Zulfia Zabirova third at seven seconds.
– 3 Molinos Resort rider Santos Gonzalez has been announced as testing positive during March’s Tour of Murcia, where he recorded a narrow overall win over Caisse d’Epargne’s Ivan Gutierrez. Gonzalez is reported to have tested positive for a corticoid and overall victory in the race is likely to be awarded to Gutierrez.
– The fall-out from the Operacion Puerto investigation has continued to spread beyond the Tour de France with the news that the Belgian Unibet.com team have provisionally suspended Carlos Garcia Quesada after his name appeared in the list of 58 names implicated in the Spanish inquiry. “We are not allowing Carlos to race while we await more information from the International Cycling Union,” said team boss Hilaire van der Schueren. Garcia Quesada has told the team he has had no link with Eufemiano Fuentes, the doctor at the centre of the investigation, since joining Unibet this season. “If it is shown he has been lying he will be sacked immediately,” said team owner Koen Terryn. Garcia Quesada has been replaced in Unibet’s team for Monday’s Tour of Austria by Australia’s Matt Wilson.
