Another setback for Johan Museeuw as he is dropped by Belgian TV; the 2005 Tour looks set to commemo
PICTURE BY TIM DE WAELE Suspended for four years last week for alleged doping offences, Johan Museeuw has now been dropped as a TV commentator by Flemish channel VRT. “Whatever the extent of their palmars, anyone who is implicated in a doping affair can’t be held up as an example and be seen as an authority in that domain,” said Flemish media minster Geert Bourgeois on the decision to drop the recently retired Museeuw from commentary duties. Just two days on from the announcement of his suspension last week, Museeuw was fulfilling his commentary obligations with VRT at Paris-Tours, but Bourgeois has now insisted that Museeuw is not used again by the channel for as long as his suspension lasts. * Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the tragic death of 1992 Olympic road champion Fabio Casartelli on the Portet d’Aspet during the Tour de France. The latest rumour on next year’s Tour suggests that a tribute will be paid to the Italian during the race, with a special prize going to the winner of the Pyrenean stage that crosses the Portet d’Aspet.
