The sponsors backing the teams in the International Cycling Union’s ProTour series have requested that the UCI and the organisers of the major tours meet again to discuss their disagreements over the elite level competition. The sponsors met with the UCI in Brussels on Monday to discuss this and other issues. The pre-arranged meeting came after the decision made by the major tour organisers last Friday to pull their events out of the ProTour.
The meeting had been planned to show the sponsors the media and PR impact their backing of a ProTour team had created for them during the past season. The teams were also told about the differences that still exist between the UCI and the major tour organisers, but were not encouraged to take a position on the issue.
The ProTour teams expressed their desire for a “strong and united” sport, while ProTour Council president Vittorio Adorni described the meeting as “extremely constructive”. In a press release, the UCI said the sponsors of the ProTour teams “had demonstrated their desire to assume a more powerful role [within the circuit]”.
