One of the more colourful press releases we’ve seen in recent times dropped onto our electronic doormat today. Make of it what you will . Sorry, but we have no idea who old Mongo is or was, or precisely why the event in question would bring tears to the eyes of this lachrymosely challenged individual.
Rustlers, cutthroats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, half-wits, dim-wits, vipers, snipers, muggers, buggerers, bush whackers, horn swagglers, horse thieves, gear monkeys, crank pushers, squish jockeys, hard tailers, 29ers, 69ers, Colonel Cranks and skid kids.
Hold onto your hats cowpokes, because we’ve got a ride for you. All you city folks should just walk away. No yellow-bellied whiners here. Only real deal, bronc-busting wranglers need sign up for this one. This day would even make old Mongo cry, so saddle up buckaroos and buckarettes, the epic ride is on.
The race starts in Nelson at The Sacred Ride, climbs up to the top of Pulmonary then plunges down to Highway 3. All you cowpokes will then head up Marsden Road and keep pedalling until you get up to Baldface Lodge, elevation 6,750 feet. Once everyone has rustled up some vittles and watered their horses, you’ll have to find some more mustard, because it’s up to Cherry Tops, elevation 7,200 feet. After a breath-catching and breath-taking moment to switch ‘er over to downhill mode, competitors will then fly down Cherry Bowl, Upper and Lower Swamp Donkey, then pedal up a short distance to Shannon Pass. Then it’s back down to Kootenay Lake to rinse the cow patties off and enjoy a quick little spin back to town and the finish line at James Johnston Park. Yes, you read that right … we’re talking about 6,000 vertical feet and somewheres around 60 km!
It’s not about crossing the line first, it’s about enjoying the bejeezus out of a big ride. You’ll be getting poker cards along the way and the best hand wins. There will be a ton of awesome prizes so like we said it’s not about riding fast. Riders should bring plenty of water, snacks, tools and gumption, but some trail-side refreshments and a finish-line barbecue is included.
So come one and come all to see “what in the wild, wild world of sports is goin’ on here”! We are also looking for volunteers. For more information, contact us at the info below.
