The 2007 British Mountain Bike Series
Freerange Optics British XC Series and Trek Marathon Series 2007
The British XC Series is back for 2007 and bigger than ever with a new title sponsor and five races at a wide range of quality venues across England and Wales. From the flats of Thetford, to the hills of Margam Park and the original trail centre singletrack at Coed-y-Brenin there will be something for every rider over the packed weekend of racing and fun events.
As in previous years traditional XC racing will be held on Saturday with Round 2 headlining as a Class 1 UCI race, which will boast a £3000 prize purse, plenty of International talent and valuable points for Olympic qualification. 2007 National and National Series champions Oli Beckingsale (Giant) and Jenny Copnall (Gary Fisher/Subaru) will be returning to defend their titles but they had better be expecting tough competition, with perennial favourites Jenn O’Connor (Patterson Training) and Kate Potter (Cotic/Bontrager) who returns from a charging season down under. National cyclo-cross champion Phil Dixon (SIS/Trek), Ian Wilkinson (SIS/Trek), top under 23 rider Ian Field (SIS/Trek), Irishman Robin Seymour and Phil Spencer (Gary Fisher/Subaru) will also be representing those vying to clinch the top spot in 2007.
If you are a little more realistic about your goals this year however (or just aren’t into leg shaving) then there has never been such a great excuse to ride. This year sees racing for 7-70 year olds, so there is guaranteed to be a category for everyone. Under-12s racing is free, too so make sure you bring along the kids to give them a taste of how great a life lived on two wheels is.
Sunday sees the return of the unique Trek Marathon Series, which will take place on an extended version of Saturdays XC lap. Choose to ride the midday 25km mini marathon, 50km half marathon, or early birds 100km full marathon where weekend warriors will get the opportunity to rub shoulders with the top riders taking in a recovery ride from the previous days action! Nick Craig (Scott UK) will again be defending his marathon title and looking to claim some of the ¶£10,000 worth of swag from Trek/Bontrager/Nike, with everyone else just trying to finish their distance.
Other than the racing there will be plenty of other reasons to make a weekend of it including showers, free camping, trade stands and discounts on weekend entries. At rounds one and two What Mountain Bike will be holding their Demo Day series. Also making a welcome return will be the fun competitions organised by AQuickRelease.com and Shred including the dual descender and bunnyhop comps.
All of this makes the British Mountian Bike Series the best and most varied racing the UK has to offer so come on down, experience the atmosphere and find out why everyone else cannot wait to get on the line in 2007. Online entry and entry forms are available at xcracer.com
