Hammond to Texas
The Week on Wheels 03/12/04
Roger Hammond starts his first training camp with the Discovery Channel team next week, when he travels to Lance Armstrong’s hometown of Austin, Texas. On the cards are rides of up to four hours at a moderate intensity and the opportunity to meet the other riders and plan a racing program with the team’s technical staff. Johan Brunyeel, the team’s Directeur Sportif explained that having such an early meeting makes things easier when the season looms: “At our second meeting in California in January the new riders aren’t stressed or intimidated. They’ve met Lance, they’ve encountered the staff, they’ve encountered the States and everything runs a lot more smoothly”.
As well as whole lot of riding, Hammond can expect to be put through his paces in the gym and on the basket ball court.
Armstrong wins fifth Velo d’Or
Lance Armstrong has won the prestigious Velo d’Or award for the fifth time thanks to his record breaking sixth Tour de France victory. Armstrong has won the prize every year he’s won the Tour bar 2002 when the prize went to Mario Cipollini in tribute to his World Championships victory.
International journalists (but notably not us at C+) voted for Armstrong ahead of Damiano Cunego and Oscar Freire.

New Website for Pembrokeshire Cycling
A new website for cycling in Pembrokeshire has been launched. www.cyclepembrokeshire.com contains details of short breaks, routes, bike hire centres and other useful information. Pembrokeshire County Council sees the area as ideal cycling country because of its natural beauty, the variety of routes on offer from mountain to coastal rides and because the area has a very low volume of car traffic for many months of the year.
