PIC BY TDWSPORT.COM Quick Step’s Servais Knaven won the fifth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico on a day when the bunch were content to let a five-man break decide things between them. The overall lead stayed with world champion Oscar Freire, who had won the previous three stages. The stage took place over 12 laps of a 14km circuit at Saltara, which hosted the 2003 Italian road championship. Knaven attacked with Crdit Agricole’s Christophe Le Mevel and CSC’s Andrea Peron towards the end of the second lap, and the trio soon became a quintet when they were joined by Discovery Channel’s Pavel Padrnos and Saunier Duval’s Marco Pinotti. Although the quintet’s lead never stretched much beyond four minutes, heading into the final lap they were still two minutes ahead. Pinotti was the first to make a solo bid just before the start of the final lap, but Knaven chased him down on the final climb and quickly attacked himself. The stage then became a race of one against four, with rouleur supreme Knaven proving totally up to the task. The bunch was led in by Knaven’s team-mate Paolo Bettini, who won his national title on this circuit in 2003, and finally appears to be finding some form this season.
