Britain’s number 1 wins NORBA No 1
Norba 1, Big Bear, CA provided one of my most successful weekends and by far the most tragic weekend of mountain bike racing I have ever known. A crash in DH training on Saturday left Haruko Fujinaka so seriously injured that she died on the way to the hospital. Although I did not know her personally, the mountain bike world is a small community and her loss was felt by all.
I decided to have a go at the Norba 4X this year, just as a way of improving my bike skills while focussing purely on downhill for the world cups. It was actually a pretty fun track and after some great casing of a few jumps I somehow ended up in the final, taking 4th!
Downhill was once again a Big Bear special, just wide open, loose and very untechnical. The track was suffering under the amount of use by the time it came to the finals and I had a couple of close moments in some of the turns. It was just so loose and blown out. However I scraped the win by 0.6 sec. A great win for me, especially on this track, as it really does not suit my strengths.
