Derek Parkinson wins North Lancashire TTA 100-mile time trial

Gusting westerly winds made for tough going in the North Lancashire TTA 100-mile time trial on Saturday, with the top three riders being the only ones to go under four hours for the challenging event at Cockermouth.

With soaring temperatures adding to the tough conditions for riders, the deserved victory went to Cleveleys Road Club senior Derek Parkinson, whose time of 3hr 47min 2sec was good enough for victory by an impressive 11:24 from Paul Greenwood, the 58-year-old Clayton Velo rider.

And exactly one minute further off the pace was Cover Your rider Paul Shallicker, who clinched third spot by just over a minute from 65-year-old rival Rod Brookes (Warrington RC).

Parkinson’s victory was not the only one for Cleveleys RC, as he also led them to the team prize alongside David Turner and Paul Russell, while Cestria CC’s Deborah Hales was fastest woman with 4:53:27.

Andy Jackson takes honours in North Yorkshire

Yorkshire hardman Andy Jackson took the honours in Otley Cycling Club’s 50-mile event in North Yorkshire on Sunday, the Team Swift rider crossing the line more than four minutes ahead of his nearest rival.

Jackson, from Holmfirth,  clocked 1:46:10 to win by 4:01 from Yorkshire Road Club rival Ian Fairweather, while Sheffield Triathlon Club veteran Nick Sparks was third, another five seconds off the pace.

A large field of almost 100 riders tackled the challenging V259/1 course, which took the riders up and down the A19 from Thirsk to Ellerbeck, then back south down to Topcliffe before heading back up.

Outside of the senior times on a sweltering day, one of the top performances came from junior Joshua Teesdale, the Team Endura rider who clocked 1:51:51 for eighth spot in the solo event and was also fastest junior.

The second fastest time of the day was clocked by tandem duo of Ruth Crossley (VTTA North) and Andy Fisher (National Clarion) whose time of 1:46:38 was just 28 seconds behind event winner Jackson.

Tejvan Pettinger shines at Newbury Road Club events

Oxford’s Tejvan Pettinger enjoyed a successful weekend of time trialling in Newbury Road Club events, finishing third in their 10-mile event at Padworth in Berkshire on Saturday before winning Sunday’s 25-mile event over a similar course.

The Sri Chinmoy Cycling Team ace had to settle for third in Saturday’s shorter distance, although his time of 20:43 was only 22 seconds slower than event winner Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC) who did not ride the 25-mile event the following day.

Similarly, second-placed Nick English (Reading CC) chose not to ride on Sunday, leaving the way clear for Pettinger to move up to the top step of the podium 24 hours later.

He covered the H25/1 course from the A4 at Aldermaston to Thatcham and Lower Padworth in 54min 24sec to win by just six seconds from Maidenhead and District CC’s Peter Weir, while the promoting club’s Tristan Davenne was third, more than minute further off the pace.

Andrew Askwith secures victory in the Circuit of Burton Fleming

Bridlington Cycling Club ace Andrew Askwith secured victory in his own club’s 10-mile time trial in East Yorkshire on Saturday, clocking 23min 31sec to win the Circuit of Burton Fleming by just seven seconds.

In a tight finish to the event from Wold Newton to Burton Fleming, there was a tie for second spot between Team Swift rider Simon Beldon and Bridlington CC’s Richard Thompson, who both stopped the clock in 23:38 to share second spot.

The race for fourth spot was not quite so tight, with York Cycleworks’ Ian Holmes being almost 50 seconds slower in fourth spot.

Clifton Cycling Club’s Nollaig Heffernan secured the women’s prize with 29min 20sec, holding off team-mate Claire Gilmartin by 31 seconds.

As well as Askwith taking the overall victory, Bridlington CC were also named top team, with Askwith and Thompson being joined in the winning trio by Steven Waterall whose time of 25:52 meant an overall team time of 1:13:01. And Waterall was also named top veteran 40-49 to cap a good day for the promoting club.

Stuart Dodd wins Gillingham and District Wheelers’ event were denied a clean sweep of the podium in the Gillingham and District Wheelers’ 10-mile event on the Ashton Keynes bypass in Wiltshire by Chippenham & District Wheelers’ Ben Anstie.

Stuart Dodd won the event on the U47 course with an impressive time of 20:25 on a sweltering hot day, while Anstie was second, 28 seconds off the pace.

Dodd’s team-mates at, Jon Simpkins and Simon Smart were third and fourth respectively with 20:56 and 21:02, but although they were denied a 1-2-3 they settled for a comfortable victory in the team prize – beating Chippenham Wheelers to add some comfort to the solo result.
