UK time trial round-up: Horner takes victory in South Yorks

Top Rutland riders just one second apart

UK time trial round-up

Just one second separated the top two riders in Rutland Cycling Club’s 10-mile Christmas time trial on the Hatfield Woodhouse course in South Yorkshire.

Warrington Road Club’s Malcolm Horner made a worthwhile trip over the Pennines from Cheshire on Saturday to take victory in the popular event, with the 45-year-old clocking 23min 4sec to win by the narrowest of margins.

Verulam CC’s Jonathan Shubert, 22, had to settle for second spot with 23min 5sec, while the podium was completed by Scunthorpe Poly CC rider Anthony Nash, 43, with 23min 15sec.

Fourth overall and fastest veteran on standard, 63-year-old Tony Stott (Westbrook Cycles) posted a time of 23min 53sec for a plus of 6:38 over his age standard. The promoting club’s Peter Goodfellow and Emilie Verroken (MI Racing) took the tandem prize with an impressive time of 24 min 6sec.

Wilson wins on new course in Cheshire

Arctic Premier RT rider Simon Wilson won the Manchester and District Time Trial Association’s Christmas fancy-dress 10-mile event in Cheshire on Sunday, clocking 23min 17sec.

A good field of 95 riders turned out for the event, which was staged on a new course on the A50 near Holmes Chapel. After rain and ice in previous days, they were greeted by good, sunny conditions, if still a little cold.

Wilson’s time was 11 seconds faster than runner-up Dave Hilton (Southport CC), while Westmead Team 88 rider Jack Green  was third overall – and fastest of the juniors – with 23min 32sec.

Coventry CC’s Sharon Clifford made a worthwhile trip north by taking the women’s prize with her time of 31min 55sec, while Abbotsford Park CC juvenile Alex Royle continued to show promise with a time of 25min 12sec. Juniors was won by Jack Green, while Dave Ardern and Pat Kinch (ChurnetValley Velo) took the tandem prize with 22min 46sec. Matthew Gray (Rourke Cycles) won the fancy dress title with a time of 29min 0sec.

Barnesbury CC event called off due to roadworks

A traditional event on the Christmas calendar, the Barnesbury CC 10-mile time trial on the Arcot Lane course near Boghouses, Tyne and Wear, was called off because of roadworks on the course.

The popular event has been organised for many years by Eric Potts, who said: “There have been ongoing roadworks on the course for a while and they’re not going to be finished on time. There are roadworks on all suitable courses, which leaves me with no choice but to cancel. Hopefully we’ll be back next year.”

The festive time trialling season continues this weekend with the Team Swift-Allsports 10-mile event on the fast V718 course at SouthCave, East Yorkshire, and Farnborough and Camberley CC’s 10-mile event on the Bentley bypass course in Hampshire.
