Yet another of the favourites for the world
time trial championship has withdrawn, the latest being
PICTURE BY TIM DE WAELE The German team at the world championships in Verona have announced that two-time world time trial champion Jan Ullrich will not be taking part in this Wednesday’s title event because of stomach problems. The ailment forced the German to pull out of yesterday’s Milan-Vignola race. Ullrich has returned to Germany after a week spent racing very successfully in Italy, and is set to undergo medical tests at the University Clinic in Freiburg. “We will have to wait to find out if Jan can take his place at the World Championships road race on Sunday,” said T-Mobile directeur sportif Mario Kummer. Ullrich has been replaced by Uwe Peschel in the German team for the time trial. The veteran Peschel lines up alongside his Gerolsteiner team-mate Michael Rich in an event that has been stripped of many of its leading lights for a variety of reasons. As well as Ullrich, past champions Serhiy Honchar and Santiago Botero are not appearing, while David Millar is serving a drug ban after winning last year in Hamilton and then being stripped of the title. Defending champion Michael Rogers will start as the favourite for the rainbow jersey.
