The Belgian Unibet.com team have been offered one of the slots available for next year’s ProTour. The International Cycling Union have offered them a four-year licence for the elite level competition, assuming that a series of financial and sporting stipulations are fulfilled.
“The conditions demanded by the UCI are the same as those attached to any ProTour licence,” said Unibet team manager Jacques Hanegraaf. “Our bank guarantees that there will be no problem. We are now looking to develop the team by bringing in new riders who can make the Unibet squad stronger.”
Team boss Koen Terryn described the UCI’s announcement as “excellent news”. He added: “This will allow the team to take part in the sport’s most important races.”
Among the team’s first signings is procycling columnist Frank Hoj, who has admitted several times in recent weeks that he was looking for a new squad because his current deal with Gerolsteiner is set to run out. The team which already comprises Australians Baden Cooke and Matthew Wilson is now looking for a team leader.
