Vos wins World Cup final, bumps Cooke off top spot

World champ Vos takes all

Dutch rider Marianne Vos (Team DSB Bank) won the Rund um die Nürnberger Altstadt in Gernamy Sunday, beating Ina Teutenberg (T-Mobile) and Regina Schleicher (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherungen).

Vos’ victory also propelled her into the top spot of the season-long World Cup series, which Nicole Cooke (Raleigh Lifeforce Creation) has led since the first round in Geelong, Australia in March.

With double points on offer in the final round (150 instead of the usual 75), and 80 points between her and Cooke, Vos needed to win to have a good chance of taking the title. Third or better would have meant Cooke was World Cup champion for another year.

The top teams therefore policed the 117km race closely, preventing any breakaways and the finale came down to a bunch sprint. Vos edged out T-Mobile sprinter Ina Teutenberg to take the win, while Cooke was a surprising 34th and therefore out of the points.
