Two Yahoo! Purple Pedals bikes, equipped with a solar-powered camera and GPS receiver which uploads photos every 60 seconds to a Flickr stream, are being used by the Lancaster City Council’s Cycling Demonstration Town (CDT) Project Team.
“We jumped at the chance to partner up with Yahoo! and take the bikes for a month,” said Matt Moran, the council’s Workplace Cycling Officer. “I’m sure they’ll add a real element of fun to all of our Bike Week events (13 – 21 June).”
The concept behind the Purple Pedals project is to merge the idea of using a bike to explore and a camera to capture the explorations and share them with the world. The bikes are customised Yahoo! purple Electra Townies.

The CDT Team intends to use the bikes as a key part of their national Bike Week activities during the month of June, including documenting individuals who cycle to and from work for the first time and for a trip into the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
“The reaction to them has been great and we’ve already spent time on them cruising up and down Morecambe Promenade in the sunshine!” Moran added.
