Hans Dampf 29er Tyre (12)
Schwalbe’s Hans Dampf is the all-mountain tyre 29ers have been waiting for. It has a 2.35in UST-compatible carcass and weighs 865g, but this heft is soon forgotten when you start pushing the tyre hard off-road.
We found that the softer Trailstar compound was best up front and the faster-rolling Pacestar compound good for the rear. The grip is phenomenal, and at times felt almost like we were running a 26in Maxxis Super Tacky tyre.
The sturdy carcass doesn’t wallow at lower pressures and inflated tubeless with ease. We’ve suffered no pinch flats during testing either. The tread pattern is wide and open so it’s never going to be the fastest-rolling tyre, but what’s important is how well it works in a variety of conditions – from dry and loose to downright foul conditions, the Hans Dampf keeps gripping.
It clears well, the shoulder is pronounced enough to dig in well and it’s not quite as square as some, making for a more predictable transition from easy turns to full-on carves. So when the going gets rough or you fancy handing out red faces on the local shuttle, slip some of these on your bike and prepare to laugh.
