Today is the day we lose motivation, Strava says

Historical workout data points to Jan 12 as the day New Year's resolutions die

If you got a bike ride in today, congratulations - you're bucking the trend. According to Strava, January 12 is the day when most people's New Year's resolutions to exercise more fails.

Strava looked back at the 31.5 million activities that were uploaded to Strava previously in the month of January to ascertain that today - the second Friday in the month - is the day when exercising drops off.

Strava's Year in Sport 2017 report looked at the files from 339 million runs and bike rides.

That Year in Sport report made a few conclusions about staying active, including:

  • Exercising with friends leads to people being 22% more active
  • Joining a club leads to people being 46% more active
  • Setting a goal helps. Of those who set a race as a goal in January, 92% were still active 10 months later
  • Training in the morning helps. People who are most regularly active, are likely to exercise in the morning
  • Commuting helps. People who commute to work under their own steam are 43% more active at the weekend

“Sticking to resolutions is hard and we all know there’s a lot of talk and pressure in January about getting fitter and being healthier," said Strava's Gareth Mills. "A key factor in success is motivation, and analysing millions of activity uploads, we’ve been able to pinpoint the day your motivation is most likely to waver. However, it doesn’t have to be like this. We also used our data to analyze ways that active people can get through this time.”
