Video: Chris Boardman's Tour preview - stages 9-11

First time trial marks the start of a key phase of the race

Stage 7's final climb of La Planche des Belles Filles may have whittled down the overall contenders to a select few, but stages 9, 10 and 11 could have an even bigger impact. Continuing his preview of this year's Tour de France, Chris Boardman takes a look at the 42km individual time trial and the two following days in the Alps.

Stage 9

Yellow jersey Brad Wiggins will be looking to further stamp his authority on the race in this 41.5km rolling time trial to Besançon. Among his general classification rivals, Cadel Evans is likely to be his biggest threat, while teammate Chris Froome, who beat Wiggins in last year's Vuelta TT, may throw a spanner into the works of his teams game plan with a strong showing. Specialists Fabian Cancellara and Tony Martin will be eager to show why they've won the world championships in the the discipline, though a broken wrist will be an unwelcome hindrance for the German.

Stage 10

The riders will have just enjoyed their first rest day, though it's unlikely they'd have put their feet up for too long with a daunting stage 10 on the horizon. The 194km from Mâcon to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine looks to be an absolute brute, with the Col du Grand Colombier again likely to whittle down the field to a select few. It's the first time the mountain has been included in the Tour, but as it was a key part of June's Critérium du Dauphiné, it will still be fresh in the minds of major players like Wiggins, Evans, Froome and Nibali.

Stage 11

The only day of this year's race in the heart of the Alps, the 148km stage 11 from Albertville to Les Sybelles sees the race climb both the Madeleine and Croix de Fer before the first high mountain top finish on La Toussuire. With almost half the Tour still to go, the fight for the yellow jersey will be down to a select few.
