Sustrans reveals £50 million routes plan

Lottery money to benefit 6 million in 79 towns

This month sees the opening of a vote which could bring £50 million in route improvements for UK cyclists. Sustrans, the country’s leading cycling charity, recently got through to the final of a competition for a huge pot of money from the National Lottery.

The Connect2 project, which would make cycling and walking easier for six million people, is one of four projects in the running for the cash from the Big Lottery Fund’s The People’s £50 Million.

After the final contenders were announced Bikeradar promised lots more details about the individual schemes which would be getting the money if Sustrans win.

Those schemes include:

A bridge in Northwich will make it easier for children to get to school.

A new route in London will stop cyclists being targeted by muggers.

New cycling routes in Monmouth that will save cyclists from massive detours.

Connect2 aims to improve local travel in 79 communities by building walking and cycling bridges and tunnels, developing links, even re-instating a ferry. It is designed to bring people closer together, making journeys quicker, healthier and more convenient.

Across the UK six million people live within a mile of the proposed schemes, including a GP and marine biologist in Perth and a company director in Northern Ireland, who can see Connect2’s benefits for the whole community.

One million schoolchildren alone lie within a mile of a scheme and TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, former Government minister Charles Clarke, cycling scientist Adam Hart Davies, pro-cycling designer Wayne Hemingway and London mayor Ken Livingstone are among the high-profile supporters of Connect2.

Voting for the winner of the £50million will take place online and by phone following a TV show about the four projects on ITV1. Full programme details will be released in mid November.

Online voting will open here at 9am on 26 November.

The result of the public vote will be announced in early December.

A total of 79 schemes make up the Connect2 project.
