7Mesh is a relative newcomer of a brand, but in a short space of time it has developed a reputation for impeccably designed kit made to an extremely high standard. It’s the jacket that everyone wants to borrow from the kit bag and then ‘forgets’ to give back.
7Mesh's signature style is somewhat streamlined, so the easy cut of the Guardian was a surprise. It very much has the feel of an original old-school MTB jacket; one that has been designed for extended back country rides with room to layer up in case you get caught out in the very worst conditions.
An easier cut there might be, but the usual 7Mesh clean lines remain as well as all the practical details you need.
For example, there's an excellent over-helmet hood which adjusts at the front and back with single-pull cords. It’s not only simple to use but provides a custom adjustment that gives a completely unrestricted view and comfortable barely-there fit.
The fabric is Gore-Tex Active, which is both lightweight and highly breathable. I’ve worn this in a range of conditions that have included milder days when I’d usually weigh up the benefits of a full waterproof over the breathability of a windproof, and more often that not decide to take a chance on getting rain soaked in order to stay cooler.
I can’t deny that I'm a sucker for the sleekness of 7Mesh's school of design, but when that’s paired with a great performance fabric it becomes a jacket that’s hard to put down, even at this price. If you play all day and have fallen for the 7Mesh aesthetic, the Guardian jacket is a winter riding investment worth making.
