Deuter Trans Alpine 30 backpack £75

Big capacity pack

BikeRadar score 4/5

The well thought out design and robust construction of this 1,230g pack make it a good choice for adventure rides. The huge 30-litre body can be used as one or split into two, with the base section accessible by a zip – ideal for storing your sleeping bag or stashing grubby clothes.

The contoured straps are well padded, and lined with the same mesh as the raised back pads that run vertically either side of your spine. This padding makes for comfortable weight distribution and helps the air circulate.

The pack has several useful pockets, with a tool-size one on the front, pockets on each side and handy food stash pockets on the wings of the hip belt. It’s versatile too, in that if you’re not fully loaded the compression straps keep contents neat and contained.

The back pad is removable so you can use it to sit on when you stop for a rest, or if you prefer you can use the pack without it. We particularly like the international emergency signal information and telephone numbers printed inside.

Robustness does come with the downside that it’s a fairly heavy pack, but it rides lighter because it fits and loads well. There’s no hydration bladder, but we favour the option of using our own.
