Colnago EPS (Frame & Fork) )(10) | $4438.81
BikeRadar verdict
"Manages that rare balance of comfort, stability and agility, which is high praise and a definite recommendation"
Made from hand-rolled carbon tubes, with design input from Ferrari engineers, the second incarnation of Colnago’s top-of-the-range EPS promises plenty... and it delivers.
Ride & handling: The EPS balances comfort with speed and rigidity
As you’d expect with a bike decked out with a top-flight groupset and a lightweight set of wheels, the EPS really flies.
It’s smooth on the climbs and quick to whip up to speed on the flat, but where it really excels is on descents; push it fast into a corner and ride on the limit and it feels surefooted and confident.
There is also a distinct feeling of solidity – not necessarily what you want to hear when talking about a top-of-the-line superbike, but it’s really the best way we can describe the EPS.
It’s sturdy and surefooted, but with a lightness that only the very best can provide. The frame may not set any records for low weight, being over the kilo mark, but you don’t ride a frame, you ride a bike.
The rest of the equipment on our test bike was fairly mid-range – an aluminium bar, stem, seatpost and saddle – but if you were to spec finishing kit befitting a frame of this calibre you could easily shed a couple of pounds.
Chassis: Hand-built frame is rock solid even when you’re sprinting out of the saddle
The EPS is Colnago’s flagship road machine and, unlike some of the marque’s lesser ranges, it’s still made at their Italian factory.
It’s also made in an astonishing 22 different frame sizes; 14 with traditional geometry and eight sloping. This is because it’s constructed using Colnago-specific lugs, developed in conjunction with a team of Ferrari engineers and produced in multiple sizes and shapes from 150 different moulds.
The tubeset isn’t off-the-peg either. Colnago use a pre preg carbon cloth which is wound by hand into tubes to ensure the correct layup and to control the amount of resin to create the best characteristics for each tube.
The top tube and down tube also feature what Colnago call 3PRS, which can best be described as three 10mm wide carbon ‘ribs’ on the inside of the tubes; the thickness tapers along the length of the tubes and the ribs prevent any lateral movement.
The result is a chassis that’s rock solid even when you’re sprinting out of the saddle and wrenching on the handlebars.
The chainstays are new Colnago Power Stays, massively oversized and shaped to add maximum strength and resistance to twisting forces from the bottom bracket. A dedicated EPS fork is also used with a specific tapered headset, 1in at the top and 1¼in at the bottom, to stiffen the front end for more precise handling.

There is no question, the EPS is a pure ORGASMIC frame. Built for purpose and a joy to ride. Once tried, you will never look back!

This frame is OK. But even cursory inspection shows it is not nearly as refined in terms of design, features, carbon modulus, and construction techniques as Trek Madone 6.

Seen it in the flesh and also had a look over the Project Madone 6.0.
As an engineer I'd get the Italian, as a rider I'd get the Italian and as a lover of the arts I'd get the Italian.
Handmade versus watched over industrial process. Horses for courses.

Do I see lugs?...in a £3 frame?...living in the past? lol

The lugs are made of carbon to stiffen the joints and for the old-style looks.

I thought the lugs were to allow for the 22 different frame sizes

yes lugs are used to make construction easier ! Mono frames are designed to use layering around the joints creating a stronger/stiffer and lighter frame....lugs are old school by todays standards. Im assuming they make frame construction far longer...hence the £3 cost !?

Nothing wrong with lugs. This frame is constructed to an extremely high standard. Anyone who has seen this frame in the flesh will notice the build quality and paint finish. Also, its made in Italy!

Maybe the made in Italy explains the £3K price. Lugs, it's almost too funny. Glad to see the Italian design groupies trying to justify this ridiculously over priced outdated technology.

Anyone who has seen one of these frames up close will realise the class and quality of them from the hand sprayed graphics(no cheap transfers here) to the quality of the carbon tubes which are better finshed on the inside of the tubes than some of these gimicky frame makers are on the outside.
Lugged construction is used in some of the best frames out there ie TIME,LOOK,PARLEE etc.
These frames may be expensive but they hold their value and won't be superceeded in 2011 by a newer shinier model that is supposedly stiffer here and lighter there as is the case with many of the more massed produced makers.

I'm sympathetic to the anti-lug perspective, but it is mostly hysteria. There is nothing luddite about lugged construction - its far stronger and more compliant than monocoque, at a small weight penalty. The market will tell us when lugged construction is outdated...and the EPS is an absolute best-seller. Look for it in the Protour this year.

People who say that luggs construction is outdated prove to know nothing about bike construction. Carbon luggs make a stronger and more reactive frame than monocoque...
And yes they will retain their properties longer.
My EPS is my fourth Colnago, and the first one (which I sold used) is still on the road!
Colnago bikes were, are, and will remain the best in all aspects...
