Woolistic Molteni Wool winter trainer review

For the record, Molteni is the team the legendary Eddy Merckx rode for from 1971 to 1976 and this is a recreation of the Molteni trainer he wore throughout these years riding in the winter and keeping warm post-race.

A must-have jersey for those with an Eddie Merckx fixation

For the record, Molteni is the team the legendary Eddy Merckx rode for from 1971 to 1976 and this is a recreation of the Molteni trainer he wore throughout these years riding in the winter and keeping warm post-race. Woolistic take a great deal of pride in the faithful recreations of their classic range complete with embroidered livery and as close as possible matching the original colour palette.

It's not all retro though, the quality 2 ply (double thickness) Merino wool is prewashed and shrunk to save any washing mishaps and finished with a modern nickel YKK zip. Fit is more generous than usually found on European clothing (Woolistic are Swiss) so our tester's usual 'L' frame was happier in a 'M'. In use this trainer keeps you very warm due to that double thickness wool, but in the rain it eventually becomes waterlogged. On colder dry days it's supremely comfortable.

We loved the styling (but we are suckers for classic retro looks) and it performs well on dry cold days, but we can't help thinking that the natural home for the winter trainer is for wearing after a race, pub rides and just to wear off the bike.
